Expert Talk on Top 8 Emerging Security Challenges

A Expert talk on "Top 8 Emerging Cyber Security Challenges" was organised on 20th July 2016 at Block 2, room number 203 CUFE, as part of ASCII Club of CSE dept and CSI Student Branch Chapter . The speaker Dr.Srinivas(Srini) Sampalli, Professor and 3M National Teaching Fellow in the Faculty of Computer Science, Dalhousie University, Canada  had delivered talk  which saw 90 participants from 7th  sem (CSE/IT) and 3rd sem M.Tech CSE/IT.

The session was started by Dr. K Balachandran, Head of Department of Computer Science by introducing Speaker and the topics which were going to be discussed by the speaker .
Dr. Srinivas started session by introducing himself as well as his areas of research work which are classified as below:


•    Emerging wireless technologies and mobile cloud computing.
•    Security and privacy in wireless networks.
•    Smartphone and near field communication (NFC) apps for healthcare and the social media.
Later Dr. Srinivas continued the session by giving an overview of University Of Dalhousie., and the topics that he would discuss which was mainly focused on the following topics:
•    Cyber threats
•    Cyber attack
•    Traditional defence mechanism
•    Top Eight Picks
•    Lessons for the future
The session was covered with following brief aspects
1.    Network security in general, and cyber-security in particular, stands out as a critical issue in the design, deployment and management of today's Internet and cyber infrastructures. The objective of the talk was to provide a comprehensive coverage of security, including intrusion methods used by hackers, security goals, design mechanisms and top eight Cyber Security Challenges.

2.    New threats faced in network security are ransomware, cyber-exploitation, phlashing, botnets etc and the various  tools used for this purpose like Nmap, Kismet, Nestumber etc.
3.    Brief overview regarding Traditional defence mechanism like Firewalls, Cryptography helps to protect your network and transaction.

4.    The top eight Cyber Security Challenges faced today are:
        1. Human factor
        2. The Internet of Things
        3. Critical Infrastructure
        4. Denial Of Service
        5. Healthcare and wearable devices
        6. Automobiles
        7. Mobile Technologies
        8. Cloud Computing
5.    The latest technologies like cloud computing, E-Commerce, Internet banking etc which indeed needs high level of security.Since,these technologies hold important information regarding a person.
The session delivered by the speaker was learning , interactive and motivated students to pursue final semester project in the areas of security, IoT. Later all the queries put up by students were answered to their full satisfaction, indeed it witnessed an enthusiastic response and participation from the crowd.

The session came to an end with distributing certificates to the students who had done their internship under CDI(Centre for Digital Innovation)  and  a valedictory speech by Dr.Balachadran Head of Computer Science and Engineering Department. The speaker expressed happiness of conducting the workshop during the day.
